How To Create A Football Lineup

A clear lineup saves time before kick-off. It helps players understand their roles, gives coaches a reference point for changes, and creates a clean team sheet for parents, fans, or social posts.

Pick The Match Format

Start by choosing the correct format: 11-a-side, 7-a-side, 6-a-side, or 5-a-side. The number of players changes the pitch spacing, so avoid squeezing a small-sided team into an 11-a-side shape.

Choose A Formation

  • Use a familiar shape for important matches or teams that train less often.
  • Use a more ambitious shape when players already understand their defensive jobs.
  • Keep the goalkeeper, central defenders, and central midfield roles clear before filling wide positions.

Add Names, Numbers, And Substitutes

Add shirt numbers where possible because they make the lineup easier to read from a distance. If you have substitutes, list them in the order you expect to use them or group them by position.

For youth and grassroots teams, check spelling before export. A lineup graphic is often shared widely, and small name errors are the easiest thing to fix before download.

Export And Share

Once the lineup is set, export a PNG and share it with the group chat, coaching staff, or social channel. Save a browser draft if you expect to reuse the same squad next week.
