7-a-side
7-a-side Football Formations
7-a-side football rewards compact shapes and quick support. There are fewer hiding places than in 11-a-side, so every player needs a clear job in and out of possession.
2-3-1
The 2-3-1 is one of the easiest 7-a-side shapes to organise. Two defenders protect the goal, three midfielders give width and passing options, and one forward stays high enough to stretch the pitch.
3-2-1
A 3-2-1 is more cautious and works well against stronger opponents. It gives the goalkeeper more protection, but the two midfielders must be brave enough to support attacks quickly.
2-2-2
The 2-2-2 creates simple pairs and can suit teams learning positional discipline. The risk is that the middle of the pitch becomes stretched if the front pair stay too high.
Coaching Tip
In 7-a-side, teach players to recover to a compact shape first. Once the team can defend together, attacking rotations become much easier to introduce.
